The idea of funding the construction of a mile long concrete Boardwalk may have seemed daunting to our forefathers back in 1928 and yet they pulled up their sleeves and built it.
The Boardwalk they built has a special quality that has set Ocean City apart from other shore towns. Those towns all have their own beaches and attractions, but every night people come from miles around to visit Ocean City’s Boardwalk. Along with its economic importance to the region, the Boardwalk atmosphere that has attracted visitors and their families here for decades has a value that we believe is recognized by everyone from state and local leaders to the first time summer tourist.
Our goal is to gather political and financial support from these varying groups of people – the people who get the most back from the Boardwalk – and combine it with traditional funding methods to model, with a single 60′ x 60′ Sample Module, how the reconstruction of the entire Boardwalk might be accomplished. Redoit.org has already received over $25,000 dollars of in kind professional services and $10,000 in pledged material donations. As the project unfolds we anticipate that more material donations will be forthcoming from vendors wishing to showcase their products on the Boardwalk. In the meantime our professional team will be working with Ocean City’s leaders to explore the availability of grants and stimulus money that might be used to further offset the cost of reconstructing the Boardwalk.
The balance of the funding necessary to build a Sample Module will be raised through fundraising and donations from members of the Boardwalk Community who know the value the Boardwalk. To give something back to these donors we are planning a central lane of the Sample Module where their names will be permanently engraved in the Boardwalk decking so that 80 years from now, people will know who pulled up their sleeves and built the new Boardwalk.
To the right is a layout of the Boardwalk decking. Each rectangle represents a 24″space where a name can be added. Details will depend on the choice of decking and totals funding costs. Until they are worked out, we will use this layout diagram to gauge the amount of public support for the Sample Project. Use the form below the diagram to let us know if you would be interested in having your name added to the list of people who rebuilt the Boardwalk and we’ll update the diagram to reflect this support.
